Abstract: | : | Everyday, humans sense new information on the World Wide Web. Much of this information is obtained from social networks, by following the activities and utterances of friends and/or strangers. This talk is based on papers published in conferences such as AAAI ICWSM and WWW, and will explore several research questions around how this *distributed social information gathering* works: How does information found through social means differ from that found through search? How to create and bootstrap a community which shares information? How do we manage information overload? How can we verify the quality of the data?
