| Abstract: | : | Everyday, humans sense new information on the World Wide Web. Much of this information is obtained from social networks, by following the activities and utterances of friends and/or strangers. This talk is based on papers published in conferences such as AAAI ICWSM and WWW, and will explore several research questions around how this *distributed social information gathering* works: How does information found through social means differ from that found through search? How to create and bootstrap a community which shares information? How do we manage information overload? How can we verify the quality of the data? Speaker Bio : Dr Nishanth Sastry is a Senior Lecturer at Kings College London. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK, a Master's degree from The University of Texas at Austin, and a Bachelor's degree from Bangalore University, India, all in Computer Science. He has over six years of experience in the Industry (Cisco Systems, India and IBM Software Group, USA) and Industrial Research Labs (IBM TJ Watson Research Center, USA). He has also been a visiting scholar at the Advanced Network Architecture Group, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. |
