Abstract: | : | Cognitive Radio is an emerging field of research that has the potential to cause a global transformation in the present day radio technology. The present day radio spectrum is allocated and divided between licensed and unlicensed frequencies. This policy being rigid has resulted in some frequency bands growing in scarcity and leaving a large portion of the radio spectrum still unused. Cognitive Radio provides a flexible and efficient mechanism for effective Spectrum usage.
Cognitive Radio allows wireless devices without dedicated frequency allocation called Secondary Users (SUs) to intelligently access portions of the entire radio spectrum without interfering with licensed users called Primary Users (PUs). Such access is possible by intelligent CR MAC protocols of SUs to opportunistically access the channels dedicated for PUs. We propose a Model Predictive Control (MPC) based Proactive MAC protocol (ProMAC) for the SUs in a CR network. ProMAC is an architecture that incorporates a proactive mindset, capable of predicting when and where communication pathways exist. Employing ProMAC in a fixed and Variable network architecture, we have shown better performance over recently proposed MAC protocol. |
